The summer of 1979 was the best summer ever! Pretty, blonde and dangerously impetuous, Bev and Carol head for the sun, lucky beneficiaries of a generous university grant.
They are full of enthusiasm and the dazzling spirit of adventure that only seems possible when we are young. Essential swimwear is selected and Lipton’s vegetable oil is perfumed with patchouli for the perfect tan.
They end up in Argelès-sur-mer, on a campsite close to the coast and not far from the border with Spain. Every day brings new challenges how to hold a meaningful conversation on a naturist beach, what to do about a precocious teenage stalker, how to transport a gallon of port on a moped… all of which they meet head-on, with dubious philosophy and irrepressible optimism.
'One Summer in France' is a humorous tale based on a three-month study break the author took as part of her languages degree course at Keele University in 1979.
‘Would you do it all again?’ asked Carol.
‘Like a shot!’ I said.
And I would.

Author's Note There are three Bev and Carol adventures, which are all stand-alone books. For those who would like to know the order, here it is 'One Summer in France', 'Bunny on a Bike' and 'Stranded in the Seychelles'.

One Summer in France two girls in a tent (a Bev and Carol adventure Book 1) - edition by Bev Spicer. Humor & Entertainment eBooks @ . Reviews

Very enjoyable book. Although my experiences as a young woman were nothing like Bev and Carol's, the book captures the essence of being young and free with all of your life ahead of you. If I have one criticism, it was the amount of alcohol consumed. I hope it was an exaggeration for literary purposes. Otherwise it is great fun to read.
A light and humorous tale of two university students enjoying a summer on a beach in southern France. What's not to like? They get into some scrapes, have an adventure or two, and go merrily on their way. I enjoyed the book very much. Made me wish I had done something like this when I was in my early 20s.
I enjoyed this light-hearted reminiscence of two young British girls spending a summer in the south of France. Because Bev is studying French, her university gives her money for this adventure, which she shares with her best friend Carol. Mostly they have fun, going to the beach, eating a lot of crepes, and flirting with boys, though Bev also makes a point of reading some serious books, too. I was impressed by her reading such books as L'Etranger and Madame Bovary while sunning at the beach! I look forward to reading more books in the Bev and Carol series!
Two college girls travel to the south of France to spend their summer on the beach. Life on the beach, not travel, is the focus, and what an adventure it is! Bev and Carol encounter a wide range of characters, ranging from French locals to Spanish border guards to other European teens and families out to see the world. It is their interactions with these characters that make the book one I couldn't put down.

I was looking for a book about traveling in France, and while this book includes brief accounts of the girls' travels, it does not have much to say about the land. Even so, if ever I have opportunity to live in a tent in a French campground, I will certainly have a good idea of what to expect.
I must admit that I am a big fan of Bev Spicer. There is something about her style that keeps me happily turning pages with great interest and involvement. This was true for this little book as well as any of her other works that I have had the pleasure to read.

This book is a prequel to the hilarious "Bunny On A Bike", and tells us about Bev and Carol before their escapades at a London Playboy Casino. It seems that both of them were quirky and lovable before the Playboy Empire ever got hold of them!

They had somehow qualified for an educational grant that paid for a vacation in France presumably to immerse themselves in French culture. They did just that on rented mopeds, some cheap port wine, and visits to the nude beaches in the south of France.

I would highly recommend this prequel, the novel that follows from it, or even some of the more dramatic and darker works of Bev Spicer. I promise you that once you read one, you'll be anxious for the next. Her work is really that addictive!

This review by Mark Abrams, the writer.
Who would have thought that the trials and tribulations of a pair of port-swilling British bombshells reading Zola on a nudie beach could be so entertaining? Well, to be more accurate, Bev does the reading. Carol, the foul-mouthed math genius, spends her time unmasking binocular-wearing perverts and figuring out ever more creative ways to stretch Bev's modest travel grant.

What this pair lack in cash, they more than make up for in sheer determination to have a great time. Their fun may be a little madcap--motorbiking to Spain in their bikinis, selling illegal doughnuts for extra francs--but it is all innocent at heart. I think what I found most touching is the genuine affection shared by these two young women. Bev and Carol could not be more opposite in their personalities and interests, and yet their unshakable friendship endures through sea sickness and snoring, flooded tents and questionable dates. In the end, it is this wonderful relationship that makes ONE SUMMER IN FRANCE an adventure worth taking.
If I could describe this book in one word, it would be "charming." Well, "charming" and "delightful" - I really enjoyed every word and I think, besides the author's writing style, what I liked the best was the dynamic between best friend's Bev and Carol. They played off each other perfectly and their bond was so strong and authentic. Reading this book made me long for being 20 years old - young, beautiful and free - with my entire adult life ahead of me. It was so refreshing to read this story about two young women who didn't take a single moment for granted. Although not much "happened" in the book and there wasn't much conflict, the journey was so utterly pleasant, humorous and touching that I have to give it 5 stars.
The memoir of two friends who spend 3 months in France in 1979. Parts were entertaining, parts were a bit contrived, and too much was about how beautiful the two friends were. When I thought the story was over, it dragged on a few more chapters that had nothing to do with the main story. The it just abruptly ended like the author was trying to get a specific word count. I gave this book 3 stars because it was well written when focused on the main story.
